Inés Rubio Roa – Pop Surrealism
Artistic Vision
I am a visual artist and contemporary painter based in Madrid. From my studio in the heart of the city, I seek to establish a dialogue between the classical aesthetics of painting and the narratives of modernity. I define my work as pop surrealism, where the daily, the dreamlike, and the emotional converge in harmony. My practice is an active contribution to the landscape of emerging Spanish art, and my goal is to build a visual universe of my own.
Pop Surrealism as a Personal Language
Pop surrealism is the lens through which I explore the complexity of existence. In my works, I address the intricate relationship between reason and absurdity, the material and the imaginary, what we are and what we remember – always with a symbolic gaze, often nostalgic and poetic. Through this language, I seek to give meaning to the seemingly trivial, inviting the viewer to pause and pay attention to what usually remains unnoticed.
Figurative Content and Pictorial Process
My work has a strong figurative and pictorial component. This approach is not a simple nostalgic return, but a representational tool to create something honest and emotionally resonant. The creative process of my pieces always begins with a vague idea, without definition or limits – a faint vision of a concept that gradually takes shape and body as I process it on the canvas. I use oil on canvas as my main technique, often combined with mixed media. I always strive for excellence in detail. My intention is for each work to connect intimately with the viewer, evoking a dual sensation of strangeness and familiarity at the same time.
Evolution and Search for Style
My dual background in Fine Arts and Architecture has given me an understanding of the concepts behind artistic movements, which in turn fuels my own creative movement. Since I began painting – and surely without end – I have sought to find a personal style that reflects what I wish to express. A dynamic and ever-changing style that incorporates my training, my projects, and my experiences. Is it important to have a guiding thread? I’m not sure. Perhaps that is what I’m searching for. At the very least, I aim to give coherence to my works and cohesion to my practice, constantly introducing new styles, forms of expression, and techniques that represent me.
The Dialogue Between Art and the Observer
I firmly believe in the power of painting to create spaces for reflection and wonder in everyday life. My work focuses on opening a dialogue with the viewer and challenging the perception of material reality through fantastic atmospheres. This interaction is fundamental to my practice. I want the spectator to feel an immediate connection – for their own memory or experience to resonate with the symbolic elements on the canvas. It is in that friction between the known and the dreamlike where the magic of pop surrealism resides.
Purpose of Art
Pictorial art has the unique ability to reveal all its content in a single instant. British painter David Hockney once said that the intention of art is to share, and that every artist should bring something to people – an experience, a thought. Every artwork provokes an impression upon the viewer. To renounce that influence would be to limit my own means of expression. This ability to affect someone, at some moment, through the magic of pop surrealism, is what I aspire to. Painting is, in essence, a way to articulate my inner universe and share it with the world around me; it is the meeting point between individual imagination and collective reality.
